Crane Operator Safety:

Create a safe work environment

Safety on a crane site starts with the operator. We provide overhead crane training programs for crane operators and have worked with hundreds of companies to implement the best safe work practices to protect their employees, products, and job sites. We work with companies to create a safe work environment via established guidelines that follow the strict safety and job site regulations established by the government. These guidelines are not optional and are designed to streamline the lifting process while focusing on safe and efficient lifts.

When it comes to the development of safety procedures, our experts have taken the time to learn and understand the provincial regulations. Whether it is maintenance and inspection, safe movement or event log books, we can work with you and your crane operators to establish a safe working environment no matter the type of lifting device on site. Ensure your team is ready and hire us to train your crane operators.

Planning ahead:

Preparing for the lift

When you think of preparation, you are most likely thinking of checking the crane or lifting equipment and getting the load prepared to be lifted. However, it’s more than that, we can tell you that preparation includes the overhead crane and lifting equipment, the load and securing the lifting area you will be working in and around. One of the biggest risks of crane operations is bystanders or other workers potentially interrupting the lift or entering the load area without the operator's permission.

Simply put, you need to be aware of your entire safety zone when you are lifting. It is recommended to clearly identify the secure zone by putting up barriers or roping it off to prevent bystanders or other workers from walking in the area. As an operator, you should always be cautiously aware of who and what is in your lifting area, and no one or thing should enter it without your permission. You are the boss of your lifting zone, and no matter what another team member has to say, the operator always has the final word when it comes to a lift.

Safety Standards & Regulations

Cranes are one of the more regulated operations on any job site. The government strictly controls maintenance, inspection, load capacities and operator requirements. We help build your procedures and guidelines to cover everything that may come up on a site and set these regulations into stone. At the end of the day, the operator of the lifting equipment is in charge, and there are no shortcuts when it comes to safety.

Overhead crane safety guidelines must include pre-, during and post-lift processes to maintain all required safety standards. Our programs go into the details, such as ensuring that the machine controls are constant manual pressure type and include things such as checks for the plate or weatherproof label on the device. Safety standards are important, and we will ensure your company knows and understands the guidelines so that your worksite can be the gold standard for the overhead crane and lifting equipment procedures.

Operator Requirements:

Operators are the most important people on a job site when it comes to lifting. Much like first aid-certified workers, crane operators need to be easily identified on the job site with personal protective equipment that stands out. This could be a different coloured hard hat or even a different coloured vest. Whatever the difference, it needs to stand out so that everyone on site knows who the operator is during the lift or in an emergency.

All operators must:

  • Be competently trained and certified to operate the equipment and are authorized by your company to use the lifting equipment.
  • Be able to demonstrate competence and understanding of the crane and have knowledge about the signals for lifting operations and load charts for lifting devices.
  • Be aware of the previous lifts and entries into the machine's logbook.

This seems simple, but these processes are at the heart of lifting operations. Failure to do so can result in severe injury or death. Lifting loads is not a simple process, and ensuring that operators are competently able to work with the machine will provide a safe and efficient work site.

Crane Standards

Outside of the normal operator requirements, all bridge, job, monorail, overhead travelling or gantry cranes must meet all safety requirements of CSA Standard CAN/CSA B167-96 (R2007). These standards include the safe movement of the crane while operating, controls, electrical components, and the rated load capacity. Our team can help streamline these requirements to ensure you enjoy seamless and safe crane operation, regardless of location.

One of the most important parts of owning a crane is maintaining the crane. Preventative maintenance can go a long way to ensure your crane can avoid long and complex emergency shutdowns and keep your job site running. With our team assisting your company, we will build out your maintenance processes to include preventative and scheduled maintenance to keep your crane in working order. We also offer corrective maintenance, which our staff will provide you post-inspection. This will include all mandatory and optional repair recommendations to extend the life of your lifting equipment.

Maintenance

Last but certainly not least, inspections are a necessary part of any safety protocol for a crane, regardless of size. We provide guidelines on annual, semi-annual, and other periodic inspections to keep your crane compliant with updated safety and regulation standards. During those inspections, our inspectors will provide you with a detailed report that could include preventative or scheduled repairs if your crane or lifting device needs it. All of our inspectors are certified and will provide you with realistic and safety-focused solutions for your specific job site and lifting device.
